If he gets too far away or your horse runs into a boulder and throws you, or anything else goes wrong, you need to start over. It becomes frustrating and tedious very quickly, especially since this kind of mission is already tedious (along with fetch quests, escort missions etc.) Update: This seems to be the focus of criticism from angry fans and even angrier teenagers with poor grammar, so let me expand on it a bit. I find chase missions generally tedious. I had just played one where I tried to cut across some woods and my horse ran right into a boulder. I guarantee you that many, many players have at some point been thrown from their horse, so getting into a feverous tizzy over that happening to me and claiming I must be a terrible player is the height of silliness. It was simply something that had happened recently so it came to mind.
Here’s another example. I took an NPC back to Valentine one time and we barely bumped into a couple men walking. They immediately decided to start a fist fight with me and my NPC companion drew his gun and shot one of the men dead. I didn’t shoot the man or even raise my fists. Moments later the law is upon us with a bounty on my head despite having not shot a single bullet. So now I have to run from the law because of my idiot NPC companion. Not exactly great fun.
